TALES FROM THE CRYPT, Spring 1982 --------------------------------- Glenn Danzig, singer, songwriter and master monster of the Misfits was interviewed during the bands recent appearance in Los Angeles. Q: You guys have been playing this kind of music for a long time, so what areyour feelings on the current horror rock trend? Glenn: We've been doing this since '78, but as long as we don't get accused of jumping on a bandwagon I guess it's allright. I don't like when people do it real faggy, 'cos what we do is real ballsy, real gutsy. You've seen the words to our songs, you know. We're not gimmicky, with fake blood and all that stuff. This is real modern American horror. That's what we're about, modern American horror. Q: So, you've always been exactly like you are now? G: Yeah, that's what's to me about thie current hardcore thing, 'cos back in 78-79 we were banned from everywhere for being to hot to handle. People at our shows always went wild and not that's what's accepted today. Q: You've been through quite a bit of line up changes, haven't you? G: This is our third guitarist, and we're always getting different drummers, 'cos for some reason, drummers are fucked in the head. Most bands I know have problems with drummers. Doyle, though, is the best guitarist we've ever had. A lot of people don't like him, 'cos he doens't play a lot of lesds, but we don't like leads. We're not Journey or Styx. Q: Could you tell us something about the tour you're on? G: Well, we've done New York, Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, San Francisco, and now we're wrapping it up in LA. Q: Are you happy with the way your album came out? G: We've made attempts to do albums before, but it never sounds like us. But, we finally found a place that's halfway decent. Q: All your singles were released on your own label? G: Yeah, Plan 9 records. There's two people besides the band that help finance it. Q: You guys supposed to do a single with Dave Vanian, weren't you? G: It's all recorded except for Dave's part if he gets around to doing it. If not, Jerry will do it instead. Q: What bands do you like? Influences? G: Nobody influences us. We're just into doing what we do and we do it 'cos that's the we are. I enjoy listening to Black Flag with Henry. I like the Necros. I enjoy early Sham 69. I like a lot of old stuff and horror movie soundtracks like "The Omen." Anything Jerry Goldsmith does I dig, he's great. Q: What are some of your favorite horror movies? G: I've seen a lot that I can't remember the names of. Real sleaze-budget movies where people are thrown into ovens and cooked and eaten. Real sick stuff. Anything with David Cronenberg. He's done "They Came From Within" and "Rabid". Q: What kind of followers do you have? G: All kinds of people. People into horror films, skins, and kids who aren't pretentious about the way they look. What I don't like is these trendy punk rock guys with mohicans you can tell trendies right off. But basically we like any body into the music unlesss they're burnt-out or stupid. I hate stupid people. Q: Do you guys stress politics in our music? G: No, we're not a political band and we don't want to be a political band. You hear too much politics all the time as it is. I'm not saying there shouldn't be political bands, but we're not one. Q: What do you have planned after this tour? G: A new album pretty soon. We've got some new songs like "Demonomania" and "We Bite". We were gonna record here in L.A. this time but we didn't get a chance. We're gonna do a video which should be out by this summer. Q: Anything you want to add? G: Yeah, if anybody out there has skulls, jawbones, you name it. Send it to us care of the Fiend Club.
